The Battle With Secular Music

"I'm only interested in the beat of this song, that's all, when I'm done listening to it I would delete it". Is that sounding familiar to you?.....

There are various genre of music, but they all fall into just two classifications as far this teaching is concerned, that is, either secular or gospel. As the word 'gospel' implies, 'good news about Christ', gospel music preaches Christ. The fact that the name 'God' is mentioned in a song doesn't make it gospel, not at all. The content or message of a song has to be tested to prove it is gospel. Many of we young people are more interested in songs with all the beats, the happening songs, or the fast songs so to speak. But as Christians who are walking in the image of Christ, our interest should not be in the secular music industry.

Instead, we should continually listen to songs that remind us of our Heavenly Father. I hear some Christians say "I don't really listen to secular songs, but I just have them on my phone", and I ask, what for? If you don't need them, then why do you have them? It is what you feed your spirit that it would give back to you. You can't keep dwelling on secular music and expect your spirit to be lifted or expect to feel close to God. It's not possible, because even the Holy Spirit living in you would just quietly excuse you to feel high on that secular song or beat well enough.

Personally, I used to like "R n B" a lot, and it was really a battle to quit them and be 100% gospel. As at that time I was into "R n B", whenever I heard any preaching on secular songs, I would feel guilty and delete the ones I could delete. But getting home, I actually would download them back one after the other again. This cycle of events continued for a long time, until one night that I met with God. Really, once God has chosen you (1Peter 2:9), He would do anything to take away what He doesn't want in you, whether you allow Him or not. That night, I was in a revival service in fellowship, and suddenly, something unexplainable happened, and I found myself weeping, deleting all the seculars I had on my cellphone, and promising God never to have them again. Forcefully, I quit seculars. But about three months after that incident, trust me, I tried to download a few "R n Bs" again. You know, there is actually no way you can ever fool God and expect to win. Then, to the glory of the Lord and shame of the devil, none of those songs I downloaded again played. It seemed to me like some kind of joke, but sincerely, none played, I tried to re-download, same thing happened, they didn't just play. And that was how I finally, gracefully this time, bowed out of the league called secular.

I hope I'm communicating to you who are still fighting a battle to give up secular music. What we don't really know is that, behind every music is a spirit, and it is either from God or not. God understands that the spirit behind the secular music is at work when you try so hard to give it up yet, cannot. So, if you really want to give up on those secular music, involve God. Tell Him to have it His own way, and you would be surprised at how easily you would quit and forget secular music.

Don't let the Holy Spirit excuse you, rather, let Him edify you through the music you listen to, and take you to the Throne of Grace. Remain blessed. Shalom.
