Christians, Wine, and Alcohol
"What sorrow for those who get up early in the morning looking for a drink of alcohol and spend long evenings drinking wine to make themselves flaming drunk. They furnish wine and lovely music at their grand parties- lyre and harp, tambourine and flute- but they never think about the LORD or notice what He is doing." Isaiah 5:11-12 NLT.
I have come across several Christians who believe alcohol is bad and they don't consume it at all. While this is okay, a good number of them are just staying sans alcohol ignorantly. Christians are people who are Christ like, and wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes or other fruits (google). Apart from the health risks associated with the frequent consumption of alcohol, many Christians don't know why the true Church stands against it. Have you ever wondered why Jesus turned water to wine, thereby kind of encouraging alcohol consumption? Actually alcohol in itself isn't a bad idea, but, what makes it bad, at least for Christians, is summarized in Isaiah 5:12 above.
Drinking wine makes it very difficult for a man to notice God, or what He is doing. Jesus proved Isaiah 5:11-12 to us by turning that water into wine. Let's see how. John 2:1-11 gives a detailed report on the event that happened with Jesus at the wedding in Cana. Jesus turned the water into wine, and everyone loved it, but then, they weren't aware of what God was doing, no one remembered God at that moment. They didn't even notice Jesus, the Messiah, and the first revelation of His glory. This happened because they concentrated more on merrymaking, with all attention on the wine. As a result, Jesus directly proved what the Prophet Isaiah said about those who drink wine. In as much as drinking wine is cool, the reality of it is that, it makes one ignorant of God or what He is doing per time.
Jesus as well demonstrated how we can drink wine. Luke 22:7-30 talks about the last supper where Jesus gave bread and wine to His disciples. Wine, to Jesus signifies His blood, and He told the disciples he wouldn't drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come. If drinking wine for us doesn't signify the blood of Jesus, then there is no point drinking wine.
Are you the wine gulping Christian? Please, the Holy Spirit is telling you right now to give it up, so that you can notice God, and as well notice what He is doing per time. Remeber, the Holy Spirit is a gentle Spirit, so He would not force you to give up drinking wine for merry, but, if Jesus can give up wine till the Kingdom of God comes, definitely, you too can. May God grant us the grace to be true Christians in Jesus name, amen.
Shalom.
