What Next After Falling Into Temptation?
In continuation to yesterday's post which was centered on overcoming temptation, the Holy Spirit wants to tell you about what would happen when you give in to temptation. Nowadays, we don't hear so much teachings on what happens if one falls into temptation, but surprisingly, the Bible talks in depths on it.
"And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before. It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and reject the command they were given to live a holy life. They prove the truth of this proverb: 'A dog returns to its vomit.' And another says, 'A washed pig returns to their mud.'" 2Peter 2:20-22 NLT.
The first time I came across that verse, "mehnn" fear gripped me, as in, I was called to order immediately. Prior to that point, I was in a state where I was always complaining of the things I wished I were and had. I kept on telling God about those who are in the world and are enjoying the things that I was not, and a tiny part of me tried to imagine what going back into the world would be like. Upon stumbling upon the above verse, sincerely, I became scared. Really, it is like when you come to know Christ, there is no turning back, and that explains why Jesus said in Luke 14:28 for us to count our costs before we start following Him. Well, apparently, a good number of us didn't really count our cost before following Him (I stand to be corrected on this though), now when challenges come our way, we start doubting the credibility of God (Lord please forgive our unbelieving).
The Lord says it is not too late to count your cost now, remember friend of God is enemy to the world, and vice versa. So, if you are a Christian and didn't count your cost before following Christ, please do so before its too late. Sit down, and honestly ask yourself if you can cope with being enemy to the world and friends with God. After you have done that, then read again 2Peter 2:20-22.
Conclusively, when you are truly in Christ, and you know the path of righteousness, whether you counted your cost or not, it is not advisable for you to go back to your vomit. Old things are passed away, your wayward life is passed away, your sexual immorality is passed away, your old sinful nature is passed away, and you are a new creature. The grace to remain steadfast in the faith, may God grant it unto you in the name of Jesus.
Shalom.
