Makeup, Makeover, and the Word of God

Hello ladies! The reason why you clicked to read this post is because you want to know more on what God is saying concerning makeup or makeover as the case may be. Therefore, I want you to read this with an open mind, not judging or criticizing already, and I trust that the Holy Spirit would minister to you Himself through this post.

Makeup: cosmetics applied to the face to improve or change your appearance. Makeover: an overall beauty treatment (involving a person's hair style and cosmetics and clothing) intended to change or improve a person's appearance.

We are clear on what we mean by makeup and makeover right? Some people may classify surgical beauty procedure as makeup which I believe is wrong. Well, that's not what I'm dealing with today, maybe some other time though.

So, to what I have to say, makeup in itself is not a sin, just as sex in itself isn't a sin. It is what how we fail to manage its use that has become the bone of contention. The use and disuse of makeup is a very controversial issue in the Christian fold especially in the doctrinal churches, with some allowing their members while others discouraging their members from the use of makeup and makeover. I am not speaking for or against any church doctrines here, but I would be telling you the truth of the matter with the Holy Bible as the reference point, and not even personal views.

First of all, we need to ask ourselves, "What is the motive behind the makeup I am wearing?" Are you in your mind thinking of how sexy and appealing you would look to that guy in your class or church? Are you also looking for a way to gain approval of men so as to feel among? Or better yet, are you wearing the makeup to cover up for your lapses, say pimples, spots, birthmarks, and so on. So, the motive behind your makeover is first and foremost.

Having established that, we can then move on as to why wearing or not wearing makeup may end up becoming a potential sin. If the motive behind your wearing of makeup is to lure somebody into sin, then you are wrong. You may say that you are not luring anybody into sin, and that you just your wear makeup out of your church mind, fine! But, how about that person that you have ignorantly made to commit the sin of fornication already in his mind? "So let's stop condemning each other, decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall." Romans 14:13.

Apostle Paul advised, "And if another believer is distressed by what you eat, you are not acting in love if you eat it. Don't let you eating ruin someone for whom Christ died. Then you will not be criticized for doing something you believe is good." Romans 14:15-16 NLT. You may also in your mind feel like, "why should you be responsible for another man's fall?", dear sister, the LORD would hold you accountable for everything you do on earth. Besides, if you really love God, then you should love your brethren and not do what would make him stumble.

Also, if your motive is to seek approval from your clique so as to feel among, permit me to say that you are also wrong. First of all, you are wonderfully and fearfully made, then Songs of Solomon 4:7 says "You are altogether beautiful my love; there is no flaw in you." As a Christian sister, at this point, I don't think you should still be insecure and even go the extra mile to secure yourself (Read here on your insecurity).

Now I'm even wondering, how come you are with a group of people that make you feel totally insecure about yourself? Evil communication corrupts good manners, you know?. "Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers" Psalm 1:1 NLT.

I would like to pause it here for you to digest this little piece of information, besides I don't like writing for a long time. So, tomorrow, by the Grace of God, check back what next after meeting Jesus, and you sure would be in for more. But, make sure you question yourself deeply right now, and identify your real motive for wearing makeup.
God bless you, Shalom.
