Midlife Crisis and the Bible

Image
Midlife crisis, "a loss of self-confidence and feeling of anxiety or disappointment that can occur in early middle age." Generally, midlife crisis occurs between ages 45 - 55. But, I would say midlife crisis can occur at any age. Or how do we explain a frustrated Engineering Graduate who works as an unskilled labour due to unemployment? These days, twentysomethings are not far from midlife crisis. What does the Bible say about midlife crisis? How does one go about a dashed dream at twentysomething? Apart from what you know, what else has the story of Ruth thought you? Ruth 1-4 tells us of the story of a young Moabite lady, Ruth, who lost her husband at a very young age. Ruth, then went with her mother-in-law, Naomi, back to her home in Judah. Thinking about it, Ruth was a young lady facing a midlife crisis. She was a widow without a child. We do not know what hopes and dreams got shattered along with the death of her husband. However, we can say that a lot o...

Adulthood; Journeying with Issues of Life

Image
Hi Yeah, Hi..... Long time here! Really really been a while. About two years, maybe? A whole lot has happened in two years. Now, we are all at home, quarantining. Covid-19. Oh well! I'm overwhelmed with things I'd like to write about.  So many things has happened to me since the last time I was here. Thirty minutes ago, Facebook reminded me of one of my posts here. I read it and a couple of others. I had to ask myself, "where is that girl who wrote this?" Honestly, that girl got bottled up with the affairs of life, all these issues of life. I graduated from College. I went through the compulsory one year paramilitary service fresh graduates observe here in Nigeria. Then, I was left with the what next? One thing though, I never lost my relationship with God. Though, it's been rocky, it's been kinda onesided, like I'm just trying to figure out life and who I really am. I don't want to overwhelm you with everything. I'd take it slow. ...

The "My Pastor Said" Christian

Image
I was at the movies on a cool breezy evening, somewhere in Kwara State Nigeria. A young lady who appeared to be in her mid twenties approached me. I wasn't exactly looking like a Pastor, but from her demeanor, it seemed she needed to speak to a "Man of God". She said, "I'm sorry to disturb you, but I just want to know, is it a sin to come to the cinema? Because my Pastor said the cinema is worldy and we shouldn't do what the world is doing." Do you have a personal conviction about what you do or do you just play along with what everybody believe? As a believer, do you have a personal reason for doing what you do or is it just because an higher authority has mandated you to? Many a christian when asked why they do whatever, can hardly give a personal reason why. They cannot give a definite answer simply because, they do not have the knowledge of what they are doing. "My Pastor said I should not eat at a fancy place", "My Pastor said...

How To Like Your Country

Image
I have not always been fascinated with the colour "green". Colour green has always been just there for me. Today, I found out the reason for my being not so cool with "green", I'd tell you at the end of this post. Matthew 5:13-16 ESV " You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." So, apparently, being a child of God does not end at going to church, it goes broader than that. I want to introduce to us, "community service". Community service is defined as a voluntary work int...

The Formula to Avoiding Premarital Romance

Image
I'm so sorry you had to wait this long to hear from me again. Honestly, this matter is beyond me. I wanted to be sure to have a formula that works (emphasis on works) before I came here. I've been going back and forth on this tab for days now, but thank God, I'm ready now. Voila! I have the formula that works :) This week is my relationship's one year anniversary, yeah, you read that right, lol. Okay, our own anniversary is when we met, because we couldn't exactly place the day when we officially kicked off. So we settled for the day we met instead as anniversary, lol. Back to the matter at hand, Christian life, sex life, and real life. After my interrogation with a couple of dating believers, I realized that in the first months of being in love, they can't get enough of each other and they want to convince their psychology that they'd be with each other for life. It is like when you get a child a new toy,  he plays with it all day, he becomes so en...

Christian Life, Sex Life, and Real Life; Marriage

Image
"So I say to those who aren't married and to widows - it's better to stay unmarried just as I am. But if they can't control themselves, they should go ahead and marry. It is better to marry than to burn with lust". 1 Corinthians 7:8-9 NLT Last week,  we were deeply concerned on how to maintain sexual purity, even as a mature adult. Mature adult here means that, you have found your purpose and are walking in it. You know what you want, you know where you are and you know where you are going. You know good from bad, and right from wrong. From the opening scripture above, the counsel is to get married. However, most people still feel they aren't ready yet, they still have some things not figured out yet. But who says you must have everything figured out before you put a ring on it? The truth is, till one dies, one would never have everything figured out. In the early days, marrying as a virgin wasn't farfetched. The reason was simply because they mos...

Christian Life, Sex Life, and Real Life

Image
Wow! If you're reading this right now, something is about to get stirred up within you. So brace yourself and be ready!!! Hebrews 13:4 NLT "Give honour to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery". Every one who knows me personally can attest to my belief in sexual purity. I am, in a way, a sexual purity advocate. However, this advocacy of mine is getting hit by the strong wind of real life. While we were younger, we were taught in church to keep the bed undefiled. And that was pretty much easy to do. The "don't have a boyfriend" rule was quite easy to maintain. "Don't be alone in a room with the opposite sex" was also in a way protective and sensible at the time. I could go on and on. And really, personally for me, as a teenager and as an emerging adult, those rules were life to me. I lived them (not 100% tho, but I tried, lol). Today, in 201...

God, the Hire Assassin? Or God the Saviour?

Image
I was at a fellowship program where the prayer leader asked us, the congregation, to pray death by fire, hail, and brimstone, against those people who do not want us to succeed in life. These past few months, I have been very analytical about some kind of prayer points. For example, when I hear someone ask me to start to pray against  someone in my father's lineage who doesn't want me to prosper, I get wary of such prayer points. I stand to be corrected though, but I'm of the school of the Bible that says I am hid with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3). According to the Bible, I also know that I wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places. In other words, the devil and his cohorts (Ephesians 6:12). The devil is my enemy, not man. Let's see it this way. Judas betrayed Jesus and he seemed like the enemy. But Judas wasn't the real enemy, the devil was. If Jesus had prayed for Judas to die, I a...

Beyond Sins, Featuring "Beyonce"

Image
As I woke up this morning, a lesson centered on Beyonce struck my heart. Yes, Beyonce, the singer. One thing about her particularly made meaning to me when the Holy Spirit brought it to my reasoning. A lot of Christians divorce these days and it has almost become so "normal" already. I read on a news blog sometimes ago about how Jay Z cheated on Beyonce at some point in their marriage. And surprisingly, they're are still married today, no divorce. I also read of how Jay Z is an Illuminati member, I really don't know how authentic that is tho. On the other hand, I read of how a Worship leader's wife divorced her husband for cheating. I actually do not justify cheating in marriage, I strongly condemn it. Last I checked, adultery remains a sin. (Matthew 5:27-28) Now, look at it this way, even the devil understands that divorce is wrong. "His owns" don't divorce. The people who divorce are those Christian who fight the wrong battles. Your spous...

Don't Drive, Let Go!

Image
This morning, I woke up feeling amazing and grateful. Like, I was elated and felt really good about my environment (In contrast, it's only a regular day). I could go on and on about this feeling, because you see, it doesn't happen everyday. So on days like this that I wake up so happy without anything being the reason for it, I celebrate. Let me get straight to what really happened though. At the beginning of this year, I started a daily study of the women of the Bible. From Eve, to Sarah, Hagar, Lot's Wife, and now Rebekah. In my study of Rebekah, the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to when we tend to drag the driver seat of our lives with God. Genesis 25:21-23 accounted for when God told Rebekah that of the twins she were carrying, the younger would rule the older. That being said, the Bible recorded the account of Rebekah masterminding the future of her sons, Genesis 27. The question then for me was, had Rebekah not swapped Esau's blessings with Jacob's, would...

My God, My Finances; Will Prayers Solve My Poverty?

Image
Do prayers get one out of debt? I mean, by praying, is it likely you become financially stable? Does prayers change your bank statement? Can fasting make me a billionaire? To be honest I don't have any answer to these questions. While I'm not writing this post to stir up argument about whether being very rich is good or evil, I simply want to open our eyes to a way out of debt which has been proven countless times to be effective. I realized how financially poor my family was when I got to highschool. When I saw the other "cool" kids, I knew my family had nothing, that was the absolute truth. And so, with that knowledge, I constantly reminded myself that I needed to be wealthy when I grew up. Now, I have grown up (to some extent tho), and the financial situation of over a decade ago is the still same in my family. We pray and God gives us our daily bread and needs (Psalm 23), but how do one get to that height where you are rich enough to substantially impact o...

Why Should I Rejoice When I'm Obviously Suffering?

Image
Countless times when I got in trouble or was faced by a challenge, I found it difficult to share my fears with the people of God. The reason is not farfetched. It was because I knew they would tell me to rejoice and be thankful in my trials. Whenever I was told to rejoice, I looked at them and just concluded in my heart that they simply didn't know how to help me. As I grew in Christ, I realized why I needed to actually rejoice in my trials and troubles, yeah really! Romans 5:3 NLT "We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance." After reading that verse, the next question I asked was, "So why do I need to develop endurance, am I an athlete or what? You mean I'm going through all of this to develop endurance? What's the endurance for? I don't even want the endurance!" Literally, that was how I had felt. And I'm sure some people can relate with what I'm saying. Someone lo...

Balancing Out With The World

Image
These past months I've been fighting a battle centered on living with unbelievers. Colossians 4:6 NLT "Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone." Actually, it all started when I started to live off campus. I must tell you, the world is seriously Antichrist, like nothing in the world favors one's walk with God. For example, where I live, people talk sexual without decency. I don't even know how to explain myself, as in, for every statement anyone here makes, there's a sexual interpretation to it. Initially, I used to feel so out of place, but later on, I became accustomed, kind of like it doesn't bother me that much anymore (which of course shouldn't be). Another example that really shook me is that of a neighbor that I was supposedly "dating". What actually happened was that, we became friends by virtue of my niceness. And before I knew it, we were tagged a "couple...

When You Feel Like Sinning Again, Do This!

For the most times when the Israelites had run into trouble, the cause of their misfortune had been that they had failed in holding unto their ends of the bargain with God. What I'm saying is that, for each of the time the Israelites were overcome by their enemies, they had ignored, treated with contempt, the commandments God had given to them. Relating this act of the Israelites with our own recent times now, it is obvious that most of us Christians are also not holding unto our part of the deal. 1 Samuel 13:14-15 NLT "Now if you fear and worship the LORD and listen to His voice, and if you do not rebel against the LORD'S commands, then both you and your king will show that you recognize the LORD as your God. But if you rebel against the LORD'S commands and refuse to obey him, then His hand will be as heavy upon you as it was upon your ancestors." Romans 6:12-13 NLT "Do not let sin control the way you live, do not give in to sinful desires. Do not l...

Friendship Gone Wrong

Image
At some points in our lives, we have some random persons come in to us as "friends". By random, I mean, they are just people we really can't categorically call "friends". Psalm 1:1 "Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful." A few months back, this random person came into my life by virtue of kindness. Initially, I thought that on the long run, I should be able to draw this person closer to Christ. But funny enough, the reverse seemed to be the case. This person made me tolerate those things that I would normally not allow, and tried to lure me into the world of sin. It became so hard to let go of this person, but thank God for God, he's always saving his own. I think the problem with most of us is that, we tend to ignore the warning signals that friendship with these set of people presents, and we b...

The Secrets of Achieving a Goal

Image
This is the seveenteeth day of the year 2017, and I'm sure a number of us have already spelt out our goals (and resolutions) for the year. Hab 2:2 "And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make [it] plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it." However, why do you think your goals of 2016 were all not achieved? Well, it's simple, it probably because you haven't yet discovered the secrets of goals. I read a book "Goals", two years ago, that by the Holy Spirit taught me the secrets of achieving a goal. So, now, I'd give briefs on the secrets that would help make your 2017 goals much more achievable. 1. Your goals should be SMART, which literally means, "specific", "measurable", "achievable", "realistic", and "timely". An illustration that quickly summarizes this is, "sowing and reaping". When you plant a seed, you are specific about the kind of seed you're...

The What Next Lady Is Back!!!

Image
I'm super excited right now, wanna know why? Jesus is the reason. Within the periods that I went on break here, a whole lot has happened to me, and I'm very much eager to share. I'd be doing a weekly post, starting next week Monday to tell everything God has taught me. I've really missed being here! Oh! I almost forgot, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! wow!  Thank God we made it. I love you all.  **hugs and kisses ** Shalom.

I Pledge, Do You?

Pledge: a solemn promise or undertaking (Google Dictionary). While in elementary and secondary school, we used to recite the national anthem and national pledge every morning at our assembly. Those times, I didn't quite understand the reason for it, but now I do. Presently, the national pledge is one of those things I learned in basic school and would never forget. For the most I've seen, a pledge stays in the subconscious, and not only that, it in a way, shapes the mind and refines the heart. For instance, reciting the Nigerian pledge from childhood has in a way reinforced my loyalty to Nigeria. Bringing this lesson into our relationship with God, I really do not see anything bad in composing a pledge that would reinforce ones loyalty to God. To be candid, I feel most of the Psalms written by the Psalmist (David) started out as a pledge to God. Little wonder God said David was a man after His heart. Acts 13:32 "After removing Saul, he made David their king. God test...

Marrying For Beauty?7

First of all, one of the important choices one would have to make after meeting Jesus is the choice of a marriage partner (if single). Your spouse can make or mar you. You can either choose to marry someone with whom you can attend to Spiritual matters, or marry someone that is just indifferent. Our choices really matter greatly because, our partners are indirectly going to determine our continuity with God.  For instance, if a young Christian man gets hooked up with a lady who is not a child of God, the young man's relationship with God is definitely going to be at stake, and vice versa. Although, there are rare cases, like the Prophet Hosea whom God told to marry a prostitute. But the truth remains, "being unequally yoked with unbelievers is not God's way". Therefore, below is to aid our decision when it comes to that choice of a marriage partner. 2Corinthians 6:14.  BEAUTY IS VAIN (Proverbs 31:30). To say the truth, everyone of us has an imagination of what our...

Top 10 Things That Hinders Hearing God

To continue my last post on "hearing God", here are top ten things that prevent today's generation from hearing God. Check out for what is hindering you, and effect the necessary changes.  1. Sin "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23  2. Pride "God opposes the proud, and shows favor to the humble" James 4:6  3. Insincerity "God is Spirit, and those that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth" John 4:24  4. Hypocrisy "Woe to you, teacher of the law and Pharisees, You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to." Matthew 23:13  5. Unconfessed sin "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9  6. Not reading one's Bible "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path" Psalm...
