The Sociable Christian

Born again, sanctified, studies the Bible, prays, goes regularly to church, very active with the things of God, however, chic (attractive and fashionable) in appearance, does the "worldly things" in a godly manner, an active blog reader, watches E! News, keeps up with the Kadarshians, generally updated, and very sociable.

Does the above character describe you? If yes, this post has been written just for you alone.

Really, I am yet to come across any verse in the Bible that declares being sociable a sin per say, but then, there are guidelines and principles that have been written, to guide us, even as we sojourn in this world (1Peter 2:11).

Firstly, being sociable means being able to interact with others and one's environment in a very friendly way. We should try as much, not to confuse "sociability" with "sexy". They are two entirely different terms. Where the problem lies with most sociable Christians is in the inability to draw the line between sociability and sexy.

"Sexy", is an adjective to describe a sexually appealing person or thing- Wikipedia. In your attempt to be sociable, ensure you are not actually attempting to be sexy, whether directly or indirectly. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being friendly with the people around you, but when you try to exalt that social life of yours over your spiritual, then it is tending towards becoming a sin.

"You shall have no other god before me" Exodus 20. Has your social life become a god you now adore? A Pastor, last week in church, said and I quote, "Christian ladies of today spend two hours sitting before their mirrors, but are unable to spend thirty minutes on their knees before God."

My dear, if you are one of those ladies (even Christian guys too), then there is a really big problem. Proverbs 31:30 "Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised." It ain't until you bow down to something before it becomes your god. The moment you give a thing more attention than you give to God is the moment you have just found yourself another god.

Now, reflect on those things that largely make you a sociable person, and find out for yourself if you are already serving another god. How long do you stay online? How long do you keep up with E! News and the Kadarshians? How frequently do you feed on the latest gossip? Then how long do you spend with God, alone? How frequently do you feed on the word of God?

Verily I say unto you, if your equation is not balanced, then the love of the world rather than the love of the Father is abundant in you. 1John 2:15 "Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you."

Mind you, I'm as guilty as you may be right now, but, I have made up my mind to make the necessary amends, how about you? Proverbs 3:6 "Seek His will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take." Shalom.
