How Do You React To Anger?
How exactly do you react to an annoying situation? What do you do when you have just found yourself in a situation that has seemingly annoyed you?
Yesterday, I was at the ATM, and some guy who got there after I did, tried to cheat his way right to my place. To be honest, I didn't even think twice before I addressed him, and put him back in his rightful position. However, surprisingly, some other people on the queue were in support of him, probably because they were much older, or maybe because they felt I had not been polite enough while addressing him (of course, I was polite, ok, I was a little).
Now, that got me really mad. The first thing that came to mind was to hush all of them, but you know, God cautioned me, and I held my peace. They all kept saying what they could, and I never uttered not even a word till I left. This is just one of the numerous annoying situations that one could easily find oneself. The very important thing here is to know how to react to such situations.
First of all, you need to always remember that you are a child of God. Romans 8:14 "For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God." There is a way that consciousness makes one very cautious of God and his Spirit. And how could you possibly remember that you are a child of God when you are not in a close relationship with God?
For a person who wakes up, and leaves his house without having talked with God, definitely, when confronted with a situation that angers him, would react based on his own human feelings and emotions, which may lead to chaos. This brings us to the fact that, communication with God daily, is as important as our daily bread.
Colossians 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
A question we need to always ask ourselves is "what would Jesus do in this situation?". The Pharisees tried severally to annoy Jesus with their questions, they tried to frustrate him and to make him say something they would have used against him, but they failed each time they had tried, (Luke 5:17-26). And even up to that point when he was brought to Pontius of Pilate, they still in a way tried to make him say the wrong thing, but Jesus remained Jesus.
Another interesting instance was when the people chose Barabbas, the criminal over him. Ordinarily, Jesus should have lashed out angrily at them, but then again, he didn't (Matthew 27). He was rejected in his own village, by his own people, common, what is more annoying and saddening than that? Yet, He still remained himself, (Mark 6:1-6).
So, clearly, we are shown how important it is for us to always hold our peace when confronted by a seemingly annoying situation. If you know you have got a big mouth, (like Peter, he slashed off the ear of a soldier John 18:10), and you just cannot contain yourself, you know what? Take a walk of faith, and leave that place for a moment, talk to God, Our Father, and allow Him calm you down.
The reality is, the world would always hurl things at you, and it is up to you to remain and to act like a child of God that you really are, for you are in the world, but not of the world, (John 17:16).
Proverbs 3:12 "For the LORD corrects those He loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights." Always be conscious of God in you, Shalom.
