Online Dating? No Thanks!
There is something God has been laying on my heart to write about for a while now, and that is "online dating". However, in order to be more informed, I went as an "undercover agent" to get more insights into online dating, so you can be rest assured that I'm going to write realistically.
Mind you, I've been on several dating sites when I was an unbeliever, but this time, I went as a child of God, therefore, I know the two sides of it, a life of sin is totally not worth it. Each time I remember those times I had spent on dating websites, I knew I had made the right choice following Christ alone.
First of all, let's get some definitions right.
Online dating, is the practice of searching for a romantic or sexual partner on the internet, typically via a dedicated website -wikipedia.
It is also, a way of starting a romantic relationship on the internet, by giving information about yourself, or replying to someone else's information -Cambridge Dictionary.
So now, what's up with online dating and Christians? In my quest to getting more knowledge on the subject matter, I realized some not so common truths.
The first truth I found out was that, dating sites are filled with 99.999% unbelievers, rarely would you find a Christian who sincerely loves and seeks the LORD on those websites, don't be deceived. I am not surprised really, because, that is not where Jesus would be either, and if Jesus is not there, why would your potential spouse be there?
Some may ask, "what if God's plan is for you to meet your future spouse online?" Well, to that, I'd say, if God's plan is for you to meet your spouse online, then it is not in your place to search. I mean you are not the one to do the searching, let God search him or her out for you; I'm sure a dating site wouldn't be His method, it could be any of those other websites you less expect to meet him/her, e.g. Linkedin (**I'm just saying, I'm not asking anyone to join Linkedin to find him/her**).
And God said in the beginning that, it is not good for a man to be alone, and He would make an help meet for him. Genesis 2:18 So you see, it is not in the place of man to search for his spouse, and neither is it in the woman's place to look for her man. The LORD would take her to him when the time is right (Genesis 2:22).
And of course this doesn't apply to just anybody, it applies to those who are God's, which explains why, 99.999% people on dating sites are unbelievers. They have no one to do the searching for them, so they have taken it upon themselves to search.
Another truth is that, largely, on dating sites, a Christian's focus which is Jesus, isn't the focus of those out there. Something else entirely is their focus, sin, it is, obviously. The guy I met via the undercover job, laughed when I mentioned "no sex before marriage". And not only was he amused, he also gave me several reasons why sex is "supposedly" good before marriage.
The Bible says, thou shalt not commit fornication (Exodus 20). Right now, if you are a Christian, you love the LORD, and you are currently on a dating site, or you plan to join one, you are so wrong. Give it up and repent now before it is too late. Don't try to do God's work for him, otherwise, He'd just fold his arms and watch you lead yourself into utter doom.
Don't be like the stubborn and rebellious Israelites, let Jesus take the driver seat in all areas of your life (Hebrews 3:7-19). He is as interested in your future as you are. Colossians 3:10 NLT "Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him."
I do hope the LORD has dropped something in your heart through this post, God bless us all. And for the record, my undercover job is over, and nothing went wrong, I'm clean!!! Shalom.
