I Pledge, Do You?

Pledge: a solemn promise or undertaking (Google Dictionary).

While in elementary and secondary school, we used to recite the national anthem and national pledge every morning at our assembly. Those times, I didn't quite understand the reason for it, but now I do. Presently, the national pledge is one of those things I learned in basic school and would never forget.

For the most I've seen, a pledge stays in the subconscious, and not only that, it in a way, shapes the mind and refines the heart. For instance, reciting the Nigerian pledge from childhood has in a way reinforced my loyalty to Nigeria.

Bringing this lesson into our relationship with God, I really do not see anything bad in composing a pledge that would reinforce ones loyalty to God. To be candid, I feel most of the Psalms written by the Psalmist (David) started out as a pledge to God. Little wonder God said David was a man after His heart. Acts 13:32 "After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'" NIV

To this effect, I have by God come up with this simple pledge that you could use to compose your pledge to God. I believe, if we all compose a few lines from our hearts to God, it would strengthen our bond and relationship with Him. David's psalms drew him closer to God, and so would our pledges.

"The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people entered into the covenant." 2Kings 23:3

Below is my own pledge. So get your pen, your note pad, and put yours in writing. Also, do not stop at just writing it, place it on your door, or anywhere that you would easily see it (be it your electronic device). Please make it an habit to recite your pledge to God daily so as to reinforce your loyalty to him.

I solemnly pledge to the LORD my God this day,
To abstain from all unrighteousness;
To say NO to all ungodliness; To stay away from sexual immorality;
To live for God alone;
And to be an ambassador for Christ,
So help me God
Amen!
Romans 14:8

 This is mine, where is yours? Shalom.
