Your Part To Play
Have you promised God over and over again to stop a particular sinful habit, yet still find yourself doing the exact thing? Yes, you have tried in every way you can to stop a bad habit, but you just cannot bring yourself to stop...
Romans 7:19
Which is the way?
God has given us the power to live above sin, we have been made free from sin. And because you belong to Him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. However, there is still your part to play, and that is why I have come up with this post through the Holy Spirit to help guide every one of us.
Below are some of the things to do to overcome our disturbing bad habits, and become more like Christ. Shall we continue in sin and expect God's grace to abound? God forbid! Romans 6:1
1. AVOIDING THE STIMULUS. Whether the bad habit is masturbation or stealing, something must have spun its action. We have been set free by the blood of Jesus. But, if we keep exposing ourselves to what stimulates the sin, we are as bad as the unbelievers. We should as much as possible stay away from the things that would draw our minds towards the sins that we have already greeted goodbye. Stay away from the stimulus, avoid the stimulus, and flee every appearance of evil. Colossians 3:5
2. KEEPING BUSY. The Bible says, an idle hand is the devil's workshop. The blood of Jesus has made you free, yes, but not so that you should work no more. Rather, the blood has saved us that we may do unto good work the works of our Father. In other words, keeping ourselves busy is very necessary if we really want to remain saved. Don't let the devil find a job for you, OK? Ecclesiastes 9:10
3. CONVERGE YOUR THOUGHTS TO GOD. Whenever the stimulus comes around, and you just cannot help it, try converging your thoughts to God. Think of Him, His love, how He Has saved you by His blood. I know this might seem to be impossible when temptation is lurking around, but, thinking about God has a way of curtailing one's mind. I'm not sure how it works, but I know it does work. When you feel like seeing that porn movie again, just think of God, and try doing whatever the Holy Spirit is whispering to your heart. 1John 3:9
4. LAW OF REPLACEMENT. The easiest way to change an habit is to replace it with something else. You wanna stop drinking? Replace alcohol with fruit juice. Replace romantic novels with Christian novels (try Francine Rivers). Replace masturbation with learning to play a musical instrument. Replace porn magazines with your Bible. Instead of calling that "girlfriend/ boyfriend" over, follow a good movie. Replace your ungodly relationships with Godly fellowships. Replace clubbing with vigils. The list is endless dear, and the law of replacement really works, try it out! 1 John 5:21
5. ALWAYS READ YOUR BIBLE. One of the reasons why we emphasize reading the Bible is because, reading the Bible frequently, steadily reminds one of God, His desire, and it draws us closer to Him. When the first Book you read as you awake daily is your Bible, you are conscious of the fact that you are supposed to live a life that pleases and glorifies God, and that He Has given you the power to do so. Therefore, it becomes difficult to deliberately go against His will. Read your Bible everyday. Joshua 1:8
6. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING. Be watchful, be vigilant for your adversary the devil goes about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Our Father, lead us not into temptation, we ask thee. If Jesus had to pray against temptation, how much more we? "Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation." Luke 22:46
God loves you, He gave His Son that you may have life, how about you also standing up for Christ? Decide today to live for Jesus only. Romans 8:12-14. God bless you. Shalom.
