I Pledge, Do You?
Pledge: a solemn promise or undertaking (Google Dictionary). While in elementary and secondary school, we used to recite the national anthem and national pledge every morning at our assembly. Those times, I didn't quite understand the reason for it, but now I do. Presently, the national pledge is one of those things I learned in basic school and would never forget. For the most I've seen, a pledge stays in the subconscious, and not only that, it in a way, shapes the mind and refines the heart. For instance, reciting the Nigerian pledge from childhood has in a way reinforced my loyalty to Nigeria. Bringing this lesson into our relationship with God, I really do not see anything bad in composing a pledge that would reinforce ones loyalty to God. To be candid, I feel most of the Psalms written by the Psalmist (David) started out as a pledge to God. Little wonder God said David was a man after His heart.
